Zane-isms (August -November)

August 13, 2010
Wouldn't it be cool if we made a robot that had a tube that was connected to the house so when he sneezed the breath from the sneeze would go through the tube and blow the windmill and give power to the house and also shoot out fireworks.

Zane made a wish on a dandelion. Thank goodness you don't get everything you wish for because his wish was for turbo guns on my car.

Some day when I'm a grown up I'm going to wish I was still in Kindergarten.

Zane has to switch to a new Kindergarten class because of over enrollment. They told us to put a positive spin on it so I told him that they chose him to move because he's the type of kid who makes new friends easily. He said "Yeah, when I meet people, I become friends with them at the speed of light!"

Pillow (in Zane's voice): I'm tired.
Zane: Of course you are, you're a pillow

I'm fixing dinner tonight. I sure hope you really love something that is heated up in the microwave.

It's weird because these are called onion rings but they don't taste anything like onions. -Zane on Burger King Onion Rings

Zane just said that we should eat the Jamba vegetable everyday. You know the one that's good for kids but tastes like ice cream. I said like what we get at Jamba juice? You know it's not a vegetable it's the name of the place. He said I know mom. I'm just trying to make up jokes again.

Wouldn't it be weird if you were in Ireland and griffins flew out of a painting? But it would also make perfect sense because Ireland is a magical place.

Sometimes at circle time I'm really thinking of new inventions and then later on at recess I'm thinking of how to make them more advanced.

This morning Zane was acting up and Nathan was threatening everything he could think of but he wouldn't settle down. Finally he said, "If you don't straighten up and act like you are supposed to I'm going to tell your mom and she will deal with you when she gets home." He looked scared and did everything right from then on out.

Me: Do you believe in Santa?
Zane: Well, I believe that Santa was a real person at one time but then he died and so now his ghost delivers our presents. And I think that because he's so quiet.

At least if I get coals in my stocking we could have a BBQ.

November 30, 2010
Zane: I just put this outfit on to re-live my life.
Me: what?
Zane: yeah, if you want to re-live your life just go get some of your old clothes and put them on and if they're too small just go to the store and get some clothes like you used to wear in a bigger size. That's how you re-live your life.

The 5 Year Plan

When I found out I was pregnant with Zane I immediately entered into the "5 yr plan". We have 5 years until we need to be in a good neighborhood with good schools and be at a stable place in our lives.

It's kind of like you are a parent but you are free to do whatever you want with your kid until they are 5. You can get them into most places free, they only go to daycare because you have to work or because you chose to take them there. It's more about you and your life and they are just along for the ride.

BUT...when they turn 5, things change. They start Kindergarten. If you don't take them to school it's against the law! They are full price for almost everything. They know how the world works. You can't just make up stuff as you go along anymore. They remember what happened last year for Christmas and what they got and have expectations for next year. They have opinions about everything. You can't just dress them in the style you want. They have their own style and tastes. As it turns out Zane was on a 5 year plan too. He's not a baby at all anymore. He's a full fledged independent person.

So it's been 5 years.

Zane met his goal and so did we. We are officially done with the 5 yr plan and on to the 13 yr plan...saving for college!

Oedipus Complex and Another Baby

Yesterday before Zane got ready to leave I said give mommy a hug before you go. He came over and gave me a hug and then planted a 50's movie star kind of kiss on me. You know, the kind of kiss you would practice on the back of your hand, the way you thought you passionately kissed before you learned about the whole tongue part. I started laughing and asked what kind of kiss was that? He seemed embarrassed and didn't say anything.
I asked, "Have you see people kiss like that on T.V.?"
Still just silence.
I said, "You just love mommy a lot, huh?"
He said, "Yes."
And we left it at that.
Then later that night he said we should make another baby. I started to get worried but then I remembered he has no idea how people make babies and he just meant us as a family not specifically him and I. This started a long discussion about the fact that he doesn't think two kids is very many and that he really really really wants a brother. That he wanted Fiona to be a boy and she wasn't and she likes too many girl things to just make her a boy.
Me: You know there is no guarantee that the next baby would even be a boy.
Zane: That is what wishing wells are for, all we have to do is go to the well and make a wish and it will be a boy.
Me: What if someone else, like Fiona, wishes for a sister?
Zane: Well, we have to make sure that we tell EVERYONE to only wish for a boy baby.
Me: Would you want another baby if it was a girl?
Zane: No.
Me: I'm pretty tired and I don't know if I can handle another baby.
Zane: Don't worry, mommy, I will help you. He can be like my baby.
Me: Do you remember how much I threw up when I was pregnant with Fiona? I don't want to be sick again. And babies are a lot of work. They have to learn to sleep and I have to breastfeed them. I don't think I have the energy Zane. Maybe we could just adopt a boy who is close to your age and then he could be your brother.
Zane: OK, we can adopt a boy but he needs to be a baby and you can just give him a bottle.

Happy Valentine's Day Mommy

Zane is still learning about gift giving. We were walking through a store the other day and he saw a pretty necklace and wanted me to buy it for him to give to me for Valentine's Day. It was so sweet I almost did it.

I never understood how my mom could say that just being my mom was present enough. I get it now though. The littlest things your kids do are way more special and memorable than anything they could ever buy for me.

He brought home an arts and crafts project from school the other day. I said, "Zane, did you make this for me?" "Yes mommy and the hearts are on there for two reasons. The first reason is because Valentine's day is coming up and so the hearts on there are for the holiday, Valentine's day. The second reason is because I love you."

Seriously, what more could a mom want?

Bigger than the Biggest Sun

When I was little I told my mom, "I love you this big" as I stretched out my arms as wide as I could.
She replied, "I love you bigger than our house." And so the competition went on...
"Well, I love you bigger than Wellington."
"I love you bigger than Kansas."
"I love you bigger than the whole United States"
We ended with "I love you bigger than the world." And we still say that to each other today.
So, of course, as soon as Zane was able to talk, I want to recreate the same special exchange. We went back and forth the same way but ended up with,
"I love you bigger than the biggest sun!"
And so that is what I'm naming this blog.
